All Questions carry equal marks

1. An induction motor has a short circuit current equal to 6-times the full load current
at normal voltage. It has a slip of 5 percent on full load. Calculate the starting
torque in terms of full load torque if started by:
(a) A star-Delta starter
(b) An Auto-Transformer with 60 percent tapping. Ignore the magnetizing cur-
rent.
[16]
2. (a) What are the various types of induction furnace? Make a neat sketch and
describe one of them.
(b) 100kg of tin is to be melt during an hour is a melting furnace. Determine the
suitable rating of the furnace, if melting temperature of tin is 235 0C. Specific
heat = 0.055, latent heat = 13.3 Kcal 1 kg. Take initial temperature of the
metal as 35 0C. [6+10]

(b) What are the advantages of coated electrodes in welding process? [16]
4. A incandescent filament lamp is suspended 2 m above the such working plane. The
lamp and the reflector are such that the illumination below the horizontal is 500
candle. Find the illumination at a point P below the lamp exactly and at position
2m, 4m and 5m from P all in a straight line. [16]
5. With a neat diagram, explain the construction and working of Mercury vapour
lamp. [16]
6. What are main transition connections from series to parallel operation of traction
motors and what are their relative merits? [16]
7. The average speed of a train is 50 kmph. Determine its maximum speed assum-
ing trapezoidal Speed-Time curve, if the distance between the stops is 2.5 km,
acceleration 1.8 kmphps and retardation 3kmphps. [16]
8. (a) Define and discuss the significance of the following terms:
